Spelling Bee Rules
Due to the fragile state of the residents such as hearing and diction problems, the caller will be understanding and flexible with the rules, always protecting their dignity. The students must follow the rules.
1. Spellers must qualify under these basic requirements:
a. The student must not have passed beyond the 6th grade and be the representative of their school or youth organizations.
b. The student must be partnered with a nursing home resident. Each student and resident is a team.
c. Each facility is allowed to send two teams to the Spelling Bee.
2. A point system will be used to allow the partnership to stay in the spelling bee longer. If one teammate misses a word, the other teammate gets a chance to spell the same word. If the first teammate spells the word correctly the team gets 2 points. If the second teammate spells the word correctly the team gets 1 point.
3. The resident will be given the first opportunity to spell the word during the first round of spelling. If the resident spells the word correctly the next word is given to the next team. If the resident is unable to spell the word the student has the opportunity to spell the word. If both miss the word the caller will move to the next team. The next round the student will be allowed to spell the word first. If the student is unable to spell the word the resident will be allowed to spell the next word, etc. They continue to rotate during each round thereafter.
4. There will be two complete rounds made with no team being eliminated. The third round will consist of the three to four teams with the most points. The fourth round will consist of the two teams with the most points. If the leading teams are tied they will continue until one team accumulates the most points and is the winner. The number of rounds may change depending on the number of teams signed up for the event. The intent is to schedule enough rounds to take 1-1 ½ hours.
5. Any school may participate in the partnership spelling bee. Limit of two representative per school and facility.
6. The word list will be provided for the nursing home resident but not the school or youth organization. There will be a Beginner List I, Beginner List II, Intermediate List and Advanced List. We will move from the easier to harder lists if the judges feel it is necessary.
7. Words should be pronounced according to Webster’s Dictionary.
8. After the caller gives the speller a word, he or she will be encouraged to pronounce the word before spelling it and after spelling it. The judges may not disqualify a speller for failing to pronounce the word either before or after.
9. The speller may ask the caller to say words again, define it and/or use it in a sentence. The caller shall grant all such requests until the judges agree that the word has been made reasonably clear to the speller.
10. The role of the caller is to correctly pronounce the word and give a sentence, definition or other information at the spellers’ request. The role of the judges is to determine whether the speller has spelled the word correctly. The role of the speller is to gather as much information as possible to help spell the word correctly and to spell the word correctly. The judges may not disqualify the speller for asking questions.
11. The speller may stop and start over retracing the spelling from the beginning, but in retracing there can be no change of the letters of their sequence from those first pronounced. If letters or their sequence is changed the speller will be eliminated.
12. Any questions related to the spelling of a word should be referred to the designated judges before the speller affected would have received his/her next word had he/she stayed in the spelling bee.
13. The judges are the final authority.
14. There will be a 1st, 2nd and 3rd place winner. Winners will receive a donation, given directly to the participant child’s school. Donation monies have been donated by the sponsor of the event. The amounts of the donations vary depending on how you place in the event.
