Ron Bunnell, Bunnell Family Cellars Wine
The Bunnell Family Cellar specializes in small handmade lots of wine
from Rhône Valley and Bordeaux grape varieties. Our “vins de l’endroit” (wines of a place) showcase exceptional vineyards in the Columbia Valley. “Vins de l’esprit” (wines of the creative spirit) are unique examples of the art of blending. All of our wines are made in small open top fermenters and punched down by hand at the family winery. They are then aged for about 18 months in American and Hungarian barrels in our underground barrel chai and bottled with minimal or no filtration. We think the most important role of the winemaker is to be a good steward of the wine and let it speak for itself.
Ron Bunnell grew up in Memphis, Tennessee and received his BA from the University of Tennessee in 1975 and an MS in Plant Ecology from the same institution in 1978. Ron went on to earn his MS in Enology and Viticulture from the University of California at Davis in 1983. He has also earned an MBA in wine marketing at Sonoma State University. Ron has over thirty years of winemaking experience in Napa, Sonoma, Monterey, Santa Barbara and Washington state. He has worked with some of the most talented winemakers of our time including Ed Sbragia (Beringer), Patrick Leon (Georges Dubuoef and Chateau Mouton Rothschild), Jean Louis Mandrau (Chateau Latour), Renzo Cotarella and Piero Antinori (Antinori).
After 17 years of winemaking in California for Beringer Vineyards, Chateau Souverain, Kendall-Jackson, and others, Ron and his wife, Susan, moved to Washington in 1999 to take the position of Head Red Winemaker for Chateau Ste. Michelle and Winemaker of Col Solare. In 2004, they founded The Bunnell Family Cellar for the purpose of specializing in small lot, handmade wines. In 2005, they launched their second brand, RiverAerie, named after the Bunnell home and herb farm on the Yakima River. In 2009, Ron and Susan established Wine O’Clock, their wine bar and bistro, to showcase the family’s wines and Susan’s culinary skills.
Susan was born in Campbell, CA and raised in Los Angeles. She has spent most of her adult life in culinary pursuits and prior to moving to Washington, she managed the dining room at Domaine Chandon in Napa and, before that, the dining room at Chateau Souverain in Sonoma County. She is an accomplished chef, having been employed as a private chef to a record executive’s family in Los Angeles. Susan is a Master Gardener and tends the raised herb beds at Wine O’Clock Wine Bar and Bistro herself. She is also a talented designer, having executed the design of all our wine packages, as well as the Wine O’Clock building and the interior of our tasting room in Woodinville, which opened in 2012.
